Mission
In the perspective of sustainable development,
while better taking into account the Cree traditional lifestyle
and ensuring Cree participation in the different procedures of
forest planning and management activities, the mission of the
Cree-Québec Forestry Board is to analyze, oversee and
evaluate the implementation of the forestry objectives set out
in the Agreement
concerning a new relationship between le gouvernement du Québec and the Crees of Québec, and
to make the necessary recommendations to concerned parties in
order to ensure that the measures and spirit of this Agreement
are respected.
Chapter 3 : Section on forestry
The Agreement
concerning a new relationship between le gouvernement du Québec and the Crees of Québec contains a forestry section which is described in Chapter 3 and Schedule C. Chapter
3 of the Agreement deals with:
- Limits of the territorial reference units and use of ecological data;
- Determination of the new management units;
- Sites of special interest to the Crees;
- Maintaining forest cover in the whole of each trapline;
- Protection of forests adjacent to watercourses and lakes;
- Development of the road access network;
- Two implementation mechanisms (Cree-Québec Forestry Board and Joint Working Groups);
- Funding;
- Effect of the adapted forestry regime ;
- Access to forest resources;
- Employment and contracts;
- Muskuchii territory;
- Firewood;
- Agreements with forestry enterprises; and
- Conflict and incompatibility
Further more, Schedule C of the Agreement deals in more details with these aspects :
- Mosaic cutting with protection of regeneration and soils;
- Maintaining of a forest cover in the whole of each trapline; and
- Preparation, consultation and monitoring of management plans (general forest management plans (GFMP) and annual forest management plans (AFMP); transitional measures).
